The truth about college

Many 18-year-olds across the country just embarked on the greatest adventure of their lives: college. For the first time, they are without parents, subject to very loose rules and able to make their own future. Naturally, this comes with some expectations, and many of them are spot-on. Parties are as awesome as you think, home games are a blast, and hook ups are plentiful (if oft regrettable). But a few are a little misinformed. I'm here to pass on my formidable knowledge -- not to cause dismay, but to scale this expectations down to reasonable levels. Incoming freshman, I don't mean to crush dreams (you'll get plenty of that after you graduate) I just hope to inform you of the true nature of things so you aren't disappointed. 10. What you think The truth There's gonna be so many Guys/Girls! They'll be so much better! They're all the same as before. I know you're tired of all the members of the opposite sex at your high school -- we all were. But one can reasonably concede that the same kinds people attend every high school. Well guess what? All those people graduated, went to college and are back together again!… Full Story

The Testosterone Toll

A lot has been made of the emasculation of the American male. Comedians have done shows on it, pundits have preached about it and entire movies have been dedicated to it. I would put links here, but none of them are safe for work. However, for every action, there is a reaction. Manifesting itself every day is a strange undertow to American male culture: the "manliness" factor. Things that have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on actual masculinity are deemed "manly," while others are quite the opposite. Day in and day out, we men slog across this minefield of bizarre expectations, bombarded by ridiculous posturing, asinine rules and outdated regulations. Here are four of the most prevalent. 1. Men know cars. This one has been around since the invention of the automobile. Understandable, since the first automobile industry workers and mechanics were men, and most modern mechanics still have a Y chromosome. So I get where it comes from. But take a survey of 100 men you know. Ask three simple questions: Do you like cars? Do you know how to change a tire? Do you know how to change your own oil? My guess is that most will answer yes… Full Story

Pleasure to pain: The Sunburn Syndrome

You know what sucks? Well, I'm sure you have a list of things a mile long that you could supply, but I'm betting there's one thing that we can all agree on: sunburns. Sunburns suck. They suck hard. Sunday I was fortunate enough to get enough free time to play some golf. Unfortunately, it was about 95 degrees, and -- due to some exceptionally sadistic greenskeepers -- were out there for about an hour and a half longer than normal. By the end of the round (which devolved into something of a death march on the back nine), my companions and I were all quite toasty. We had fallen to nature's greatest prank: the sunburn. Unlike many of the things on your hypothetical list, sunburns aren't one dimensional in how awful they are. They're a multi-faceted suckfest that has been rarely matched throughout history. Because I have spent most of my day thinking about my sunburn, I have had enough time to develop a comprehensive list of the five reasons sunburns are the absolute worst. 1. It hurts, and it's all your fault. Everyone knows sunburns are painful. It's like wearing a sandpaper suit inside out all day. Unlike a… Full Story
