       Exploring Elgin's Night Life
Deirdre Higgins White has been an Elgin resident for the last 20 years, who has been very skeptical about Elgin's Night Life (ENL). So she has taken it upon herself, with the help of her friends and family, to check out the ENL scene, which includes everything from restaurants, to lounges, to theatre and more. If you would like Deirdre to check out a place you are curious about, you can send her a Facebook message at Deirdre Higgins White or send her an email at deirdrehw@aol.com. It's not an easy task, but someone has to do  it!

Memorial Day weekend in Elgin highlighted by annual Fox Trot

Picture this...Memorial Day Weekend - The unofficial start of summer in Chicagoland... runners lining up at the starting line. Perhaps they are wearing white tube socks with blue stripes to match their very short and somewhat form fitted shorts, which are topped off with a flimsy tank top. These runners recently hopped on the new running craze that was inspired by American middle and long-distance runner, Steve Perfontaine's (1951 – 1975) running success.

Prefontaine held numerous records for track and field and is still considered one of the greatest American distance runners to date. His record-breaking successes generated a significant amount of media coverage, which was said to inspire the 1970's running boom that continues on today. At the height of "Pre's" success, the City of Elgin was getting in on the action too because Memorial Day Weekend, 1977 was the first annual Fox Trot.

The City of Elgin's Fox Trot has come a long way from its very humble beginnings! At the start of the Fox Trot, 35 years ago, there wasn't anywhere close to the thousands of loyal participants, volunteers and on-lookers that the race currently draws.

Since its humble beginnings, the Fox… Full Story

Home of former Gail Borden Library now home to great Mexican food

I don't know if it was because it was the month for Cinco de Mayo or what, but I had the craziest craving for Mexican food! Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) celebrates the 1862 victory the Mexican army had over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861 – 1867). This is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, said to be the most significant national patriotic holiday in Mexico, which is celebrated on September 16th. Either way, I say...a reason for celebration!

I felt it was my duty to commemorate this special occasion, May 5th! However, it was also my calling to celebrate my friend's birthday – May 2nd, or otherwise known as, "Debbie's Dos de Mayo". So, true to my mission and in need to satisfy the appetite, I respectfully celebrated May 2nd and May 5th by having dinner with friends on May 3rd at La Quebrada.

La Quebrada is located at 50 N. Spring Street, Elgin, IL (entrance on Highland). The interesting thing about this building, is that it is home of the original Gail Borden Library. You know - the building that was named for a man… Full Story

Elgin Green Expo a chance to gauge environmental footprint

Being green used to mean that someone was jealous or "green with envy". Or perhaps someone was naïve or not very experienced, they would be considered "green around the collar". Or if someone was green, they may be sick. Kermit the Frog even sang about, "It's not easy bein' green", but today, Kermit, I beg to differ...It is easy bein' green and this weekend you can learn how easy it actually is!

In modern terms, being "green" is considered to be environmentally aware of the carbon footprint that we all leave behind in our every day living, and today, Friday, May 4, 2012 (1pm – 8pm) and Saturday, May 5, 2012 (9am – 4pm) at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony way, Elgin, the Elgin Climate Change Organization (ECCO) will present the fourth annual Elgin's Green Expo. ECCO, which was organized by Sigi, Psimenos, Sandy Kaptain and a group of very talented and environmentally concerned citizens that are - Thinking globally. Acting locally.

The ECCO Individual Pledge, among its 300 plus membership (and growing), is to "take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing ones own CO2 pollution as much as one can.… Full Story
