"That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you...
Haven't you ever felt that way about music?"
--Andy Dufresne "The Shawshank Redemption"

For most people music is just, literally, background noise. It's just something to have on while cleaning the house, working in the yard, or one may have a set of earbuds plugged in while working out or out for a jog. For others, it's a passion. It's ingrained in your life. You remember what songs were playing at certain key points in your life. How about in a movie. Think Donovan's "Atlantis" in the beating scene of Billy Batts in "Goodfellas". You hear certain songs from the past and the sense of immediacy of that moment is so very real it's as close to a time machine as we'll ever see. There are music fans like that in Elgin. There are also some great bands in Elgin that are worth your time. They want to create new music memories for you.

Elgin has a burgeoning music scene. While we are all familiar with the renowned Elgin Symphony Orchestra, we'll let others better suited and suite-ed take on the ESO. What we are talking about is rock and pop music. Granted, it may not be 1960's British Invastion, Minneapolis of the 1980's, Austin, TX, or Seattle of the early 1990's. We do, however, have our share of local talent to be proud of and well worth your time to drop a few bucks on a CD or a paid download.

Bands like The Reverends, The Love Shots, Vehicle, My Lazy Elephant, and others, make music and play shows because they love to. Sure, if they happen to get rich along the way, all the better, but these are grassroots projects on their own record labels or on small independent labels. These bands make well crafted original music. Most of them have official CD's, their music is released on iTunes, or it may be "streaming" on their websites. Find and "Like" their Facebook pages and go to their websites. They will appreciate it more than you know.

There is no shortage of live venues in town for these and other bands to play. The Elgin Public House, Villa Verone, Douglas Street Sports Bar & Grill, The Walnut Speakeasy, Martini Room, Tilted Kilt and Gasthaus all host live music. Invest an evening, a few dollars on a show (Some are even free!) and just few more on a CD to help promote live music in Elgin. So if you are a hardcore music fan or a casual fan, live music can create memories that you won't soon forget. Keep 'em spinnin' and see ya at the show!
