You've seen it all before. The comfortable, floral-patterned booths; the lace curtains in the windows; the fresh carnations on each wooden table; the landscape painted on the wall. It's an eatery design tried-and-true used to create a homey feel, a place where you can take the kids or meet with a group of friends for a cup of coffee. Thumbnail image

But these touches do nothing to distract you from the fine cooking at the Baker Hill Pancake House. Unassuming and unpretentious, Baker Hill's focus is on its extensive menu and quality food. In the mood for a hearty salad, but you need a grilled cheese for the kids? Done. Looking for turkey platter or a BLT? You're in luck. And since it is a pancake house, the breakfast menu is quite far-reaching.

The morning the Boca Jump review staff ate at Baker Hill, we were impressed by the friendly customer service and the variety of breakfast options.

Our waitress made a few recommendations which helped immensely; Cherry crepes or the scrambled eggs with fruit and toast. We've never been good at making decisions so we just ordered both, a technique that has served us well since most restaurants offer somewhat skimpy portions.

While most of we Bocas are bacon-and-eggs types, the crepes at Baker Hill were a delicious departure. The eggs came fluffy and tasty, as ordered, and everything was hot, an essential elements of breakfast.
Service is a hallmark of Baker Hill, and our waitress came by several times during the meal to refill coffee and juice, even though the place, as always, was hopping.

Just as we were finishing, she offered takeout boxes, cracked a joke and lingered for a minute to chat. Nobody wants to feel like they're being rushed out of a booth at a restaurant, and our waitress never gave that impression.

Other menu items range from a buck or two for sides and some a la carte items to breakfast entrees in the $4-$8 range. Most non-breakfast items ran from $6 to the mid-double-digits. Baker Hill Pancake House is more than a breakfast stop, but the Breakfast Guy gives it a thumbs up for quantity and quality of the food and the excellent service.

The Breakfast Guy

The Breakfast Guy is a single man who dearly loves breakfast. He is real and he scours Elgin for the best breakfasts on your behalf. Breakfast is a unique and personal experience and The Breakfast Guy, or the Breakfast Dude if you prefer, will travel anywhere in the city limits, at any time of the day or night to find the perfect omelets, the fluffiest pancakes, the crispiest bacon or the best coffee. Breakfast is not always a morning activity as many Boca Jump lovers know but it is a meal best enjoyed sober and not after a night of remorseless drinking (That's what burritos are for). But there is a special place in heaven for restaurants that serve breakfast all day, or at least past 10 a.m. for the late risers. The BG visits breakfast spots unannounced, pays for his own meals and leaves a generous tip. He bases a lot of his impressions on service, cleanliness and efficiency (have you ever watched your food languish under the heat lamp while your waitress vanishes to parts unknown?) Speed and accuracy of the order is also paramount. Any review is done independently of advertising. Advertisers cannot pay for or even request a review.

Lastly, we do not trash any restaurant. If we do not have a good experience in multiple visits to the restaurant, we do not review it. The absence of any restaurant's review should not be construed as a negative experience.
