The Elgin Country Club (elgincc.com) is nestled away at 2575 Weld Road, Elgin, just west of Randall Road. It is one of Elgin’s mainstays, having been in business since 1901! I remember the first time I was at the Country Club – I was invited to play a round of golf. I use the word “play” very loosely because my golf motto is: “It’s better to look good (golfing) than play good (well).”
Anyhow…When I walked around to the back side of the club house, I could not believe my eyes! This is one of the most beautiful pieces of countryside I have ever seen! It has the old, wise and mighty oaks that line many of the 18 holes in addition to being dotted throughout the golf course. The landscaping of flowers and indigenous plants adds to the beauty of the land. It has lush green rolling hills that made me feel as if I had left the flatlands of Illinois and landed in the waving hills of Tennessee! (Side note: I have never actually been to Tennessee, but my friend Felicia says that’s what it reminded her of – and she’s from Tennessee.) Soooo…I come to find out that the Elgin Country Club is located in the middle of the Valparaiso Moraine. These rolling hills were created by a receding glacier about 25,000 years ago! For many years, over and over, the edge of the glacier grew larger and smaller which created the rows of waving hills….Right here in Elgin!
Were you all paying attention because there may be a geology quiz at the end of this article! Ok. Ok. Now that the lesson is over, I can get back to “Livin on a Prayer”! Like, I am so sure! This 80’s party had lots of taffeta, big hair and “Zumba” work out pants! Joan Jett and a member of Whitesnake even made an appearance…well some characters that certainly looked like them! And when the music started, I saw the Running Man, the Cabbage Patch, and my favorite, the Robot done old school way – oh wait, I think that was me!
The Country Club sure knows how to put on a good party! They have many events throughout the year, such as a Wine & Chocolate event, an Improv comedy night, a Big Band Night, “Ravina” on the lawn, the Holiday Gala…something for everyone! The food is top notch! You can order a fine dining selection such as the Lobster Piccata which consists of lobster medallions dipped in Parmesan batter, pan-friend and napped with white wine-butter sauce. Or you can go with a grille type faire such as “The Elgin Burger” – 6 oz. of the Country Club’s round and brisket blend charbroiled or on the griddle – your choice! No need to ask, “Where’s the beef?”
The Country Club realizes that times are tough for many, so they have made it more affordable for everyone to join! Once you are a member, you can enjoy the fine dining, great service and maybe even some golf, tennis or pool time in the summer! Also, it offers a great opportunity to meet people, network, and it’s a good place to bring family, friends and business associates!
I pity the fool who doesn’t get a chance to check out the Elgin Country Club. It’s fab-o-rama!
