I'm watching a movie called "Mindwarp" about the future when our society does nothing on its own and lives vicariously through virtual reality.  Of course, the young girl doesn't want to obey and wants to experience a real life but her mother convinces her that there is no reality or "out there" and to be content with the bloodless, artifical world in which they live.

They live in a single room, all white, no features, no contrast, no lines or contours. Now the point is that this movie was made in 1992 and set far, far in the future. They have computers that monitor their activities and give them instructions, surely a novel and unique concept when the Internet was just a rumor. But the computers and the technology that was supposed to be so advanced as to make us gasp with delight is now laughably ancient, less than 20 years after the movie was made. The display is analog, the oversize cursor pulses, the graphics are rudimentary and the monitor is a huge, bulky cathode ray tube. The lesson is, never make a movie about what the future will be like. You will look silly.

So I switched to something called "The Core" about a group of intrepid scientists who contruct a vessel to take them to the Earth's molten core to stop some horrible event that would end life on this planet. Their little ship made of something that can withstand temperatures hot enough to melt iron sloshes around in the magma with barely a sweat on the faces of the concerned scientists who fortunately don't require a mask or any artificial breathing devices.
Now THAT'S reality!
