A semi struck and killed a man on Big Timber Road near Hillcrest Road on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred about 9:50 a.m., according to Elgin police, who responded with Elgin firefighters to scene.

Elgin paramedics immediately transported the 31-year-old man to Sherman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The accident sparked the closure of Big Timber Road between McLean Boulevard and State Street (Route 31) for more than two hours.

A preliminary investigation by the Elgin Police Department Traffic Unit and the Illinois State Police concluded that the pedestrian was walking north across Big Timber when he was struck by the trailer portion of a semi. Police continue to investigate the crash.

The Illinois State Police completed a motor carrier inspection of the truck involved. The vehicle was released from the scene to the company owner.
