The League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area continues its exploration of the city’s form of government from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave.
In January, the League of Women Voters of the Elgin Area sponsored a community forum, “Elgin’s Government ... Past, Present & Future.” The Jan. 10 forum took a historical look at Elgin’s form of government, tracing how it evolved to the city manager/council form of government that has been in place uninterrupted since 1954.
Tonight’s forum is focused more on the future. The 2010 census put Elgin’s population at 108,000, which will enable the city to add two more members to the City Council. (Story continues below)
In light of that, the league asks, “What are the possibilities for the future of Elgin’s form of government? Keep it at-large, or go to a ward or modified ward system?”
Dr. Kimberly Nelson, assistant professor of public administration at Northern Illinois University, is the speaker tonight. She will explain the advantages and disadvantages of at-large vs. ward elections of council members.
Bring your questions and join us for enlightening conversation.
The discussion is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Elgin Area, the Elgin Community Network and the Gail Borden Public Library.
