Elgin police arrested an armed robbery suspect Monday afternoon, minutes after the incident occurred.

Awaiting bond call today is Jesus K. Martinez, who is charged with armed robbery with a firearm, a Class X felony, and robbery, a Class 2 felony.

Martinez, 22, of the 300 block of Orchard Street, Elgin, is out on parole from the Department of Corrections, police said.

Police reports said officers responded to the area of State and Morgan streets about 2:26 p.m. for a report of a person having just been robbed at gunpoint. The offender, who was described as having a distinctive tattoo on his forehead, had fled northbound on foot from the scene.

Within minutes, responding officers found Martinez in the alley near 217 Oak St., just west of State Street. He was detained and later identified as the offender by the victim and a witness.

Detectives from the Major Investigations Division completed the investigation of the incident.  Evidence of the robbery, including cash and business checks belonging to the victim, were recovered from Martinez.  No weapons were located or recovered.
