The Elgin City Council on Wednesday awarded a $23,975 bid to LPS Pavement Company to replace the pavers in front of and behind City Hall.

Some of the square pavers have begun to wobble as people walk over them. City officials say it’s been brought on by the effect of the freeze and thaw cycles over about 10 winters on the support structure beneath the pavers.

The council learned Wednesday night that the new system has a plastic base that is not as susceptible to the effects of moisture and the freeze-thaw cycle.
